Douyin: views stuck at a few hundred — is my video throttled?
A 5 October 2026 explainer for Douyin creators: what Douyin disclosed about basic traffic, review triggers and stopped recommendations, and a 20-minute check before blaming hidden throttling.
Short answer: on Douyin, a new video that stalls at a few hundred plays is usually a video that did not earn the next round of recommendations — not proof of a hidden penalty. Douyin's own April 2025 disclosure describes recommendation stopping when content is actioned; a stall without any notice points you back to the video first.
This note answers one question creators keep asking, checked on 5 October 2026. It is about Douyin (抖音, China) only. TikTok is a separate app with separate policies.
The question, as creators ask it
We read Chinese-language Q&A and creator-blog pages on 5 October 2026. The same worry repeats in different words:
- On a short-drama promotion Q&A board (posted 16 August 2025): *"My Douyin videos keep stopping around 500 plays. People say it's hidden throttling (隐形限流). Is that real, and how do I tell if my account is healthy?"* (our translation)
- A 16 May 2026 explainer starts from beginners seeing only single- or double-digit plays and assuming the account was quietly limited.
- A 21 July 2026 creator blog is titled, in effect, *"Why are your plays always stuck at 500?"*
These are questions and opinions, not platform facts. The askers are mostly beginners and short-drama promoters.
What Douyin itself has described
In April 2025 Douyin held a "Safety and Trust Center" open day in Beijing and explained its recommendation and review pipeline. Xinhua and The Paper both reported the details on 16 April 2025.
| Stage | What Douyin described | What it means for a "stuck" video |
|---|---|---|
| Machine check | Content with high-risk features is blocked; suspected problems go to human review; low-risk content gets basic traffic (基础流量) | Reaching a few hundred plays usually means you passed this step |
| Ranking | A neural-network model predicts user behaviour and barely relies on content tags; targets include completion, comments, likes, long-term viewing of the creator, shares and 跟拍 (follow-on videos) | Weak early completion and interaction is the most likely reason a video stops growing |
| Re-review triggers | Reports, concentrated doubts in the comments and sudden traffic spikes can trigger human-plus-machine review | A video can be paused later, not only at upload |
| Action | Once content is actioned at any stage, further recommendation stops immediately | A real stop is a decision about the content, not a slow fade |
| Exploration | Diversity scattering, long-tail interests and random recommendations | Small niches are not excluded by design |
"Stuck" and "stopped" are different signals. A stall in the hundreds asks *what did early viewers do?* A real stop comes with a decision about the content.
What the disclosure did not say
- No official tier numbers. The reports we read give no "500 pool" or "3,000 pool". Those figures circulate in creator folklore; even the July 2026 blog above notes that Douyin never published tier figures.
- No public throttling checklist. We did not find an official step-by-step test for 限流 in these disclosures, so treat any "do X to check" advice as community advice.
- We cannot see your private data. Creator Lens reads public TikTok accounts; it does not read Douyin or anyone's private Creator Center.
A 20-minute check before you call it throttling
- Look for an explicit notice first. Check in-app system messages and the account status area of the creator center. The Q&A answers we read point askers there first; menu names change between app versions, so treat the path as a starting point.
- Compare like with like. Take your last three videos at the same age, for example 24 hours after posting. One stalled video is normal variance. Several in a row near zero, when earlier ones were not, is worth a closer look.
- Read the retention curve. Find the second where viewers leave. Fix the opening before you change anything else, since completion is one of the targets Douyin named.
- Read the comments as a signal. If people say a clip looks staged or misleading, that is the "concentrated doubt" Douyin lists as a review trigger.
- Hold the topic steady for a few weeks. This is editorial judgement, not a platform rule: a consistent topic makes it easier for you to compare results.
What not to do
- Do not delete and re-upload the same clip over and over. Each re-upload erases the history you need for a fair comparison.
- Do not buy promotion to "unlock" a pool. One Q&A answer suggests paying for DOU+ at certain view counts. Paid reach can test an audience, but it does not fix a weak opening.
- Do not port Douyin folklore to TikTok. Different products, different policies. For TikTok, start with our same-age comparison method.
Bottom line
If no notice exists and your earlier videos grew normally, assume the video lost the early test and work on its first seconds. Escalate to "my account is limited" only when several fresh, compliant videos stall at near-zero and you have checked for notices.
