Do TikTok drafts transfer to a new phone? What TikTok says, and how to keep them

Creators2026-10-08PocketPlay Editorial7 min read

TikTok drafts stay on one device. This 8 October 2026 explainer covers what TikTok's help centre says about removal, how to save drafts as files before you switch phones, and what you can and cannot recover afterwards.

Short answer: no. TikTok drafts do not follow your account to a new phone. TikTok's own help centre says drafts may be removed when TikTok is uninstalled and reinstalled on a device, or when the account is moved or switched to a different device, and that drafts can't be shared or transferred between accounts. If you want to keep a draft, you have to turn it into a video file on the old phone before you switch, and the cleanest way to do that is a private post.

This explainer is about TikTok drafts only, checked on 8 October 2026 against TikTok's English help centre. It is written for beginners and for operators who run an account from more than one phone. Instagram has its own drafts system and nothing here applies to it.

The question, as creators type it

On 8 October 2026 we ran Google's public autocomplete (United States, English) for "tiktok drafts" and "do tiktok drafts". Among the suggestions it returned:

  • "tiktok drafts not transferring to new phone"
  • "tiktok drafts transfer to new iphone"
  • "do tiktok drafts sync across devices"
  • "do tiktok drafts save to icloud"
  • "do tiktok drafts get deleted"
  • "tiktok drafts gone"

Autocomplete tells us people are typing these phrases. It does not give a search volume, and the wording belongs to the askers. We use it only to choose the question; the answers below come from TikTok's own pages.

What TikTok's help centre says about drafts

TikTok's article Editing, posting, and deleting has a short "Saving a draft" section. Read on 8 October 2026, it says:

TopicWhat TikTok says
How to save oneRecord and edit your video, then tap Drafts from the Post page
Where it lives"Drafts are saved to the videos tab on your profile"
Who can see it"Your drafts are only available to others when you post them"
When drafts may be removed"TikTok has been uninstalled, then reinstalled on a device" and "The account has been moved or switched to a different device"
Sharing"drafts can't be shared or transferred between various accounts"

The Making a post article adds one line that matters later: "Your drafts are visible only to you on your profile."

Read together, the two removal reasons answer most of the autocomplete list. A draft belongs to one install of the app on one device. Logging into the same account on a new phone does not bring it with you, and deleting the app on the old phone can take it away.

Do TikTok drafts sync across devices or save to iCloud?

TikTok does not say they do, and its removal list says the opposite. We found no sync or cloud-backup option for drafts in the help articles we read on 8 October 2026.

Phone-level backups are a different question. Some guides suggest that a direct phone-to-phone transfer (rather than restoring from a cloud backup) can carry app data over. TikTok does not document this, so treat it as something that might work, not a plan. If the drafts matter, save them as files first and then try the transfer.

How to keep a draft before you switch phones

TikTok has no "export draft" button. What it does document is how to post privately and how to download your own posts. Put those together and you have a way to turn each draft into a video file.

  1. On the old phone, open your profile and tap the draft.
  2. Go to the Post page and set who can view it to Only you. TikTok's Making a post article lists choosing who can view your posts as part of posting.
  3. Post it. It now lives on TikTok's servers as a private post, not only on the phone.
4. Save the file. TikTok's video downloads article says that even when other people can't download your videos, "You'll still have the download and sharing options available for your own content."
  5. Move the saved file to the new phone the way you move any video: cloud photos, AirDrop, a cable or a shared drive.
  6. Only then delete the app or reset the old phone.

Two things to know before you do this for twenty drafts:

  • Privacy carries over. TikTok says "Your new posts will retain your previous post's privacy setting." After a batch of "Only you" posts, your next real post will also default to Only you. Check the setting before you publish something you want people to see.
  • A private post is not a draft. You can no longer re-edit it in the draft editor. If you want to keep editing on the new phone, upload the saved file as a new video and rebuild the captions, sounds and effects there.

My drafts are already gone. Can I get them back?

Probably not from TikTok. The help centre describes a Recently deleted folder, but only for posts: "When you delete a post, it remains in our system for up to 30 days." To find it, go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Activity center → Recently deleted. That folder covers published posts you deleted. We found no equivalent for drafts in the articles we read.

So the honest checklist is short:

  • Do you still have the old phone, with TikTok still installed? Open the app there. The drafts may still be on that device.
  • Did you post any of them, even privately? Look for private posts behind the Lock icon on your profile; TikTok's troubleshooting note says that is where private videos appear.
  • Did you use any of the original clips? If you filmed in the phone's camera app first, the raw clips may still be in your photo library, even though the TikTok edit is gone.

Third-party "draft recovery" apps appear in search results. Nothing in TikTok's documentation supports them, and they often ask for broad access to your phone or account. We do not recommend them.

A habit for operators who use two phones

If you film on one phone and post from another, or a team shares one account, treat drafts as local scratch work:

  • Finish and post on the phone where the draft was made.
  • Keep the raw footage in a shared folder, so any phone can rebuild the edit.
  • Before handing over or resetting a phone, open the drafts and either post or save each one.
  • Note in your planning document which drafts live on which device.

This is less about TikTok's rules than about not trusting one phone with the only copy of your work.

FAQ

Do TikTok drafts transfer to a new iPhone? Not through your account. TikTok says drafts may be removed when the account is switched to a different device. Save them as files on the old phone first.

If I log out, do I lose my drafts? TikTok's removal list mentions uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and moving the account to another device. It does not mention logging out. We did not test logging out, so keep a copy of anything important before you try.

Do TikTok drafts expire? TikTok's help pages we read do not mention a time limit for drafts. They list the two removal cases above.

Can someone else see my drafts? No. TikTok says drafts are visible only to you on your profile until you post them.

Can I move a draft to another TikTok account? No. TikTok says drafts can't be shared or transferred between accounts. Post it privately and save it, then upload the file from the other account.

Limits of this explainer

  • Based on TikTok's English help centre as rendered on 8 October 2026. Menu names and steps can differ by app version and region.
  • We did not reinstall TikTok or switch phones to test what happens; the removal cases are TikTok's wording.
  • Autocomplete phrases show what people type, not how many people type them.
  • This is not about Douyin, which is a separate app with separate rules.

If your question is really about a posted video that is stuck, see TikTok video under review: how long does it take. To check how a post is doing once it is out, compare posts at the same age rather than against last week's best video.
